Your first dance at your wedding is one of the most memorable moments of your day and night. It is often one of the only moments that you and your new husband or wife get to spend with one another alone. After all, a wedding day is busy. But the issue many couples face is choosing the right song.

Unique First Dance Songs

These days people want something a little more unique and different. So I have created a list of some more unusual choices for first dance songs that still have the sentiment of love and relationships. I hope it gives you some inspiration. 

You’re my best friend by Queen 

Example of lyrics – “Oh, you’re the best friend that I ever had, I’ve been with you such a long time, You’re my sunshine and I want you to know, That my feelings are true, I really love you, Oh, you’re my best friend”

One of the key factors of any relationship is friendship. This song encapsulates that and so much more and is a little more unusual than a soppy love song. 

Better Together by Jack Johnson 

Example of lyrics – “Love is the answer, at least for most of the questions in my heart. Like why are we here? And where do we go? And how come it’s so hard? It’s not always easy and sometimes life can be deceiving. I’ll tell you one thing, it’s always better when we’re together”

This song is a little different from some of the others. A lovely tune that is a little more upbeat than a slow number but one that you can still sway to. 

Rewrite the stars by James Arthur and Anne Marie

Example of lyrics – “What if we rewrite the stars? Say you were made to be mine. Nothing could keep us apart, You’ll be the one I was meant to find. It’s up to you, and it’s up to me, No one could say what we get to be”

A popular song from The Greatest Showman film but a lovely one for couples. It talks about overcoming obstacles and being made for one another. 

It must be love by Madness

Example of lyrics – “I never thought I’d miss you, half as much as I do. And I never thought I’d feel this way the way I feel about you. As soon as I wake up, every night, every day, I know that it’s you I need To take the blues away”

Another unique option is this one from Madness. It’s funkier and definitely one you won’t hear too many times. But still has that sentiment of love behind it. This one will draw everyone to the dancefloor. 

When you’re smiling by Louis Armstrong

Example of lyrics – “Oh, when you’re smiling, when you’re smiling. The whole world smiles with you, baby and when you’re laughing, oh, when you’re laughing The sun comes shining through”

A shorter song, but is very direct and straight to the point. Would suit no-fuss couples who are all about their relationship and nothing else. 

I believe in a thing called love by The Darkness

Example of lyrics –  “I believe in a thing called love. Just listen to the rhythm of my heart. There’s a chance we could make it now. We’ll be rocking ’til the sun goes down. I believe in a thing called love”

If you want to get everyone on the dancefloor then this is the first dance song to pick. It is upbeat, rockier, and definitely one to have a dance to. 

Somewhere only we know – Keane

Example of lyrics – “And if you have a minute, why don’t we go. Talk about it somewhere only we know? This could be the end of everything So why don’t we go somewhere only we know? Somewhere only we know”

This is a lovely song that is all about the couple and one that you can sway to and dance to. It was a popular option for couples but these days you don’t hear it quite so much. 

Real Love by Tom Odell 

Example of lyrics – “All my little plans and schemes, Lost like some forgotten dream, Seems like all I really was doing, Was waiting for you”

The John Lewis adverts at Christmas are always filled with great tunes, but this one is so lovely it had to be mentioned. All about real love and the theme of the advert finding your forever penguin. Google John Lewis adverts if you don’t know what I am talking about. 

Life is a highway by Rascal Flatts

Example of lyrics – “We won’t hesitate, to break down the garden gate. There’s not much time left today, yeah. Life is a highway. I wanna ride it all night long. If you’re goin’ my way. Well, I wanna drive it all night long”

Finally, you can’t go wrong with this banger. An upbeat and unique first dance song for sure.
